Its zoning allows certain extractive and non-extractive uses, as long as they comply with environmental responsibility standards. However, this category does not allow: i) fishing with trawl nets, ii) semi-industrial and industrial fishing, or iii) oil exploration and exploitation.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-panel panel-default panel-0625a6976ac13c98e fusion-toggle-no-divider\"><div class=\"panel-heading\"><h4 class=\"panel-title toggle\" id=\"toggle_0625a6976ac13c98e\"><a aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"0625a6976ac13c98e\" role=\"button\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#accordion-15713-1\" data-target=\"#0625a6976ac13c98e\" href=\"#0625a6976ac13c98e\"><span class=\"fusion-toggle-icon-wrapper\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><i class=\"fa-fusion-box active-icon awb-icon-minus\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><i class=\"fa-fusion-box inactive-icon awb-icon-plus\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><span class=\"fusion-toggle-heading\">Features<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div><div id=\"0625a6976ac13c98e\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse \" aria-labelledby=\"toggle_0625a6976ac13c98e\"><div class=\"panel-body toggle-content fusion-clearfix\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Seamounts Marine Management Area (AMM-MS) is the first Protected Wildlife Area declared under this management category in Costa Rica. It was created on June 23, 2011, through Executive Decree No. 36452-MINAE. It measures 9640 km2 and is located in the Pacific Ocean, in the waters around Cocos Island National Park.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It is created with the aim of conserving: i) a representative sample of the marine ecosystem that is characteristic of the underwater Cocos mountain range, ii) aggregation sites of fish species of fishing importance, both for commercial and for sports purposes, iii) transit areas and fishing sites; aggregation of pelagic fish, cetaceans, and marine turtles, especially species that are threatened and endangered, iv) transit areas and aggregation sites of migratory species, and v) deep coral formations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The marine seamounts are comprised by a group of 15 submarine structures, including the location of Cocos Island and additional minor structures that extend less than 200 km to the west and southwest of the island (Pacheco et al., 2008). The high productivity of these geological formations, mainly of the shallowest ones, is reflected in the amount of species that are grouped in them, with a biomass that is higher than in other sites with less complexity.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In addition, the protection of these deep ecosystems tends to integrate delicate habitats and vulnerable species of flora and fauna (Morato et al 2004).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Due to its structure and the influence of currents, the AMM-MS is a migratory passage for different species: for those that move from the coast to oceanic waters, as well as for those that migrate between the islands of the Eastern Tropical Pacific Corridor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This protected area is under the administration of the Cocos Marine Conservation Area (ACMC) of the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC), an entity of the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-panel panel-default panel-556aa06b288597646 fusion-toggle-no-divider\"><div class=\"panel-heading\"><h4 class=\"panel-title toggle\" id=\"toggle_556aa06b288597646\"><a aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"556aa06b288597646\" role=\"button\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#accordion-15713-1\" data-target=\"#556aa06b288597646\" href=\"#556aa06b288597646\"><span class=\"fusion-toggle-icon-wrapper\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><i class=\"fa-fusion-box active-icon awb-icon-minus\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><i class=\"fa-fusion-box inactive-icon awb-icon-plus\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><span class=\"fusion-toggle-heading\">Core management elements<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div><div id=\"556aa06b288597646\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse \" aria-labelledby=\"toggle_556aa06b288597646\"><div class=\"panel-body toggle-content fusion-clearfix\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The conservation objects identified as priorities for the AMM MS Management Plan are:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">i) benthic ecosystems (seamounts);<br \/>\nii) pelagic ecosystems;<br \/>\niii) fish of commercial importance; and<br \/>\niv) migratory species.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-panel panel-default panel-37311d2c4ff8f1dbc fusion-toggle-no-divider\"><div class=\"panel-heading\"><h4 class=\"panel-title toggle\" id=\"toggle_37311d2c4ff8f1dbc\"><a aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"37311d2c4ff8f1dbc\" role=\"button\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#accordion-15713-1\" data-target=\"#37311d2c4ff8f1dbc\" href=\"#37311d2c4ff8f1dbc\"><span class=\"fusion-toggle-icon-wrapper\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><i class=\"fa-fusion-box active-icon awb-icon-minus\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><i class=\"fa-fusion-box inactive-icon awb-icon-plus\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><span class=\"fusion-toggle-heading\">Threats<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div><div id=\"37311d2c4ff8f1dbc\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse \" aria-labelledby=\"toggle_37311d2c4ff8f1dbc\"><div class=\"panel-body toggle-content fusion-clearfix\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The main threats identified that may directly affect the ecological integrity of the AMM MS are: i) illegal fishing, ii) transshipment of fuel between vessels or fuel spills, iii) effects of the ENSO phenomenon &#8211; El Ni\u00f1o\/La Ni\u00f1a and the impacts of climate change, and iv) physical and chemical changes of the great Eastern Tropical Pacific ecosystem.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-panel panel-default panel-e65cf695f19346e52 fusion-toggle-no-divider\"><div class=\"panel-heading\"><h4 class=\"panel-title toggle\" id=\"toggle_e65cf695f19346e52\"><a aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"e65cf695f19346e52\" role=\"button\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#accordion-15713-1\" data-target=\"#e65cf695f19346e52\" href=\"#e65cf695f19346e52\"><span class=\"fusion-toggle-icon-wrapper\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><i class=\"fa-fusion-box active-icon awb-icon-minus\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><i class=\"fa-fusion-box inactive-icon awb-icon-plus\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><span class=\"fusion-toggle-heading\">General Management Plan<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div><div id=\"e65cf695f19346e52\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse \" aria-labelledby=\"toggle_e65cf695f19346e52\"><div class=\"panel-body toggle-content fusion-clearfix\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Management Plan for Wild Protected Areas (WPA) is the guiding instrument for effective administration and management of natural and cultural elements present in protected areas.
