The<\/span> use <\/span>of<\/span> Unmanned<\/span> Aerial<\/span> Vehicles<\/span> (<\/span>UAVs<\/span>) <\/span>will<\/span> allow<\/span> detailed<\/span> geospatial<\/span> information<\/span> to<\/span> be <\/span>obtained<\/span> on<\/span> Cocos Island, <\/span>marking<\/span> an<\/span> innovative <\/span>phase<\/span> in <\/span>the<\/span> conservation<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> unique<\/span> ecosystems<\/span> of<\/span> this<\/span> National<\/span> Park. <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span> <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n

The<\/span> participation<\/span> of<\/span> academic<\/span> institutions<\/span>, <\/span>state<\/span> institutions<\/span> and <\/span>organizations<\/span> dedicated<\/span> to<\/span> marine <\/span>conservation<\/span> ensures<\/span> a comprehensive <\/span>approach<\/span> in <\/span>achieving<\/span> the<\/span> goals<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> project<\/span>. <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The<\/span> Friends <\/span>of<\/span> Cocos Island <\/span>Foundation<\/span> (FAICO), <\/span>the<\/span> Cocos Marine <\/span>Conservation<\/span> Area<\/span> (ACMC-SINAC), <\/span>together<\/span> with<\/span> the<\/span> School<\/span> of<\/span> Geography<\/span> (EG-UCR), <\/span>the<\/span> School<\/span> of<\/span> Topographic<\/span> Engineering<\/span> (EIT-UCR) and <\/span>the<\/span> National<\/span> Laboratory<\/span> of<\/span> Materials<\/span> and <\/span>Structural<\/span> Models<\/span> (<\/span>Lanamme<\/span>-UCR) <\/span>have<\/span> joined<\/span> forces<\/span> to<\/span> work<\/span> on<\/span> the<\/span> generation<\/span> of<\/span> geospatial<\/span> information<\/span> of<\/span> Cocos Island <\/span>through<\/span> photogrammetric<\/span> and LIDAR <\/span>technologies<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>

The objective of the project is to generate detailed geospatial information on relief, hydrology, land use, vegetation cover and other information of interest that contributes to the efficient planning and management of natural resources. For this, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are used, which allow this data to be obtained about the island.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The integration of specialized knowledge from areas such as Geography, Remote Surveying, Topographic Engineering and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) allows for a more complete and comprehensive understanding of ecosystems and their dynamics. For this reason, in March 2023, SINAC formally requested the support and participation of Lanamme-UCR due to its extensive experience. Subsequently, the Schools of Geography and the School of Topographic Engineering joined forces to strengthen the project.<\/span><\/p>\n
