    The non-governmental organization Osa Conservation has inaugurated a new marine research station at its Puerto Jim\u00e9nez headquarters, named after Dr. Jorge Cort\u00e9s N\u00fa\u00f1ez in recognition of his outstanding career in research and conservation of marine-coastal ecosystems in Costa Rica\u2019s South Pacific.<\/p>\n

    Dr. Cort\u00e9s, a researcher at the Center for Research in Marine Sciences and Limnology (CIMAR) at the University of Costa Rica and a Full Member of the National Academy of Sciences, has dedicated more than 46 years to the study of marine ecosystems, leaving an invaluable legacy in Costa Rican science. His work has been crucial in identifying and protecting coral reefs, mangroves, and other marine habitats essential to the country’s biodiversity.<\/p>\n<\/div>

    Beyond his academic contributions, Dr. Cort\u00e9s has played a fundamental role in Costa Rica\u2019s environmental governance. As a representative of the Executive Branch in the Friends of Cocos Island Foundation (FAICO), he has been a key figure in the management and protection of this marine protected area, promoting innovative conservation strategies and fostering collaboration across sectors to strengthen the protection of marine resources.<\/p>\n

    The new marine research station will serve as a reference center for training new generations of scientists and conservationists, inspired by Dr. Cort\u00e9s\u2019 legacy.
