Faico and SC Johnson Strengthen Their Partnership with an Ecological Restoration Day in the Tirib\u00ed Bicentennial Interurban Biological Corridor<\/b><\/h3>\n<\/div>

    September 2026. Amigos de la Isla del Coco (Faico), in partnership with SC Johnson de Centroam\u00e9rica S.A., carried out an ecological restoration day in the protection zone of the Quebradillas stream, a tributary of the Agres River within the Grande de T\u00e1rcoles River basin. The activity is part of the rehabilitation work carried out by the Tirib\u00ed Bicentennial Interurban Biological Corridor in the canton of Escaz\u00fa, and it contributes to broader goals: the National Strategy for the Recovery of Urban Watersheds 2020\u20132030, the National Decarbonization Plan 2018\u20132050, and the Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p>\n

    The initiative seeks to halt the deterioration facing a large share of the urban water bodies in the Greater Metropolitan Area<\/strong>, which are affected by pollution, encroachment on protection zones, and loss of vegetation cover. Restoring these rivers is key not only for biodiversity and public health, but also for reducing the pollution that ends up reaching marine and coastal ecosystems.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    For 2026, Faico added the strengthening of Environmental Education and Knowledge Management to its areas of action. Thanks to the contribution and vision of partners such as SC Johnson de Centroam\u00e9rica S.A., it has been possible to carry out field actions that reinforce the understanding that terrestrial and marine ecosystems are interconnected<\/strong>, and that protecting one helps protect the other. Initiatives such as tree planting help reduce erosion and sedimentation, filter pollutants, capture carbon (which lowers the amount of CO\u2082 absorbed by the ocean), and regulate the water cycle and temperature, among other benefits.<\/p>\n

    In addition to Faico and SC Johnson, the Municipality of Escaz\u00fa, the National Power and Light Company (CNFL), and residents of Condominio Los Casta\u00f1os took part.<\/strong> Each organization contributed a different piece: the Municipality provided technical support and the necessary permits; CNFL took on forestry oversight, species selection, and liaison with the Local Committee of the Tirib\u00ed CBI; and the residents participated directly in the planting, strengthening their connection to the natural space.<\/p>\n<\/div>

    Before the event, technical visits were carried out to define the intervention site and plan the logistics. On the day of the activity, volunteers received an orientation on the importance of biological corridors and proper planting techniques before planting began.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    The day brought together 35 volunteers from Faico, the Municipality of Escaz\u00fa, SC Johnson, CNFL, and residents of Condominio Los Casta\u00f1os, who planted 60 trees of 14 native species of high ecological value for the area<\/strong>, thanks to the coordination of the 5 partner organizations.<\/p>\n

    The restoration will increase vegetation cover, improve connectivity for wildlife, and encourage the presence of birds and pollinators.<\/strong> It is also expected to increase water infiltration, reduce surface runoff, and lower the risk of flooding in the area. CNFL will follow up on the planting by evaluating the survival and maintenance of the trees.<\/p>\n
