    As part of the celebration in Puntarenas, Faico organized a beach and floating waste cleanup at Isla San Lucas National Park, reinforcing its commitment to marine conservation in the country.<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>

    From August 21 to 24, Puntarenas hosted a historic edition of Costa Rica’s National Parks Day, a celebration that this year placed marine conservation at the center of the country’s environmental agenda.<\/strong> Amigos Isla del Coco (Faico) was part of the organizing committee for the event, which was led by the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE) through the Coco Marine Conservation Area (ACMC) of the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC), the Pacific Marine Park, the Costa Rican Tourism Board (ICT), the National University (UNA), and the Inter-Institutional and Community Network Pro Puntarenas.<\/p>\n

    The date commemorates Executive Decree No. 1647-MAG-MEP of 1986, which established August 24 as National Parks Day to invite the public to reflect on and actively participate in environmental conservation.<\/strong> This year, the organizers moved the celebration’s epicenter to Puntarenas, the canton where Isla del Coco National Park is located. Minister of Environment and Energy M\u00f3nica Navarro described the decision as an opportunity to place marine conservation at the center of the country’s environmental conversation,<\/strong> noting that 92% of Costa Rica’s territory is ocean.<\/p>\n

    As part of its contribution to the commemoration, Faico organized a floating and beach waste cleanup at Isla San Lucas National Park.<\/strong> Thanks to the effort and commitment of all participants, the day was a success, with a total of 285.58 kg of waste removed.<\/strong> Of this, 276.54 kg (96.8%) was non-recoverable material, with plastics and footwear being the most abundant types collected. The activity brought together 60 volunteers, reinforcing the message that protecting marine and coastal ecosystems is urgent and is everyone’s responsibility.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>

    Faico sincerely thanks<\/strong> the volunteers who joined this effort, including SINAC staff from various protected areas, as well as representatives of the Red Cross and the Costa Rican Fire Department.<\/strong> The activity also served as a tribute to the work and vocation of those who protect our terrestrial and marine ecosystems, in the context of National Park Ranger Day,<\/strong> celebrated each August 23.<\/p>\n

    The program also included the scientific symposium “Voces de la Conservaci\u00f3n” (“Voices of Conservation”)<\/strong>, held on August 21 and 22 in the classrooms of the Pacific Marine Park. Staff from the country’s 11 conservation areas shared their experiences in managing protected wilderness areas through talks, discussions, and forums.<\/strong> One hundred people attended the symposium.<\/p>\n

    The 2026 edition of National Parks Day brought together 1,823 participants in total, including 1,011 students and 812 adults. A total of 170 staff members from the country’s conservation areas took part, 113 of whom attended to visitors at the 28 information stands set up during the event. Eighteen schools also joined the celebration.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    With this edition, Costa Rica reaffirms its historic commitment to the conservation of its protected wilderness areas,<\/strong> broadening its focus to its marine ecosystems and recognizing, through initiatives such as the cleanup led by Faico at Isla San Lucas, that protecting the ocean is also protecting the country.<\/strong><\/p>\n
