FAICO launches opinion column on marine conservation in national media
The Friends of Cocos Island Foundation (FAICO) has presented a proposal to establish a monthly opinion column in the national news outlet DelfinoCR. This initiative aims to position the organization as a leading voice on marine ecosystem conservation and ocean biodiversity, while also strengthening the national narrative around Costa Rica’s commitments to ocean protection.
A space for dialogue and awareness
The column, titled “Mareas” (Tides), will cover key topics such as effective management of marine protected areas, the potential of the blue economy, climate adaptation strategies for marine ecosystems, and the global interconnectedness of Costa Rican biodiversity. It will also highlight the progress, challenges, and opportunities facing marine conservation in Costa Rica and the Eastern Tropical Pacific Marine Corridor (CMAR).
FAICO hopes this platform will help inform, raise awareness, and foster dialogue among decision-makers, civil society, and coastal communities, thus promoting collective commitment to ocean health.
Experts and monthly topics
The proposal envisions the participation of prominent experts and partners in marine conservation who will develop content throughout the year. Topics will include the importance of marine protected areas (MPAs) for ocean sustainability, women’s involvement in marine conservation, innovation, the blue economy and international cooperation, a recap of the Third UN Ocean Conference, Cocos Island National Park—the largest in Costa Rica—science as the essential foundation for conservation, regional approaches to marine conservation, and public-private partnerships, among others.
A strategy to amplify the message
Beyond publication in the press, each column will be strategically shared through FAICO’s social media channels and newsletters to maximize reach and impact.
Toward a legacy of conservation
With this initiative, FAICO hopes to help build a strong communications legacy around national efforts to protect the oceans, reinforcing Costa Rica’s leadership in marine conservation and generating greater public awareness about the importance of keeping oceans healthy for a living planet.
