These investments enhance safety, operational coordination, and the generation of key information for marine conservation.
February 2026. Throughout 2025, Friends of Cocos Island (Faico) carried out a series of donations aimed at strengthening the operational capacity, safety, and information management of the Cocos Marine Conservation Area (ACMC). These actions are part of a strategy to directly support the conservation, research, and environmental education efforts conducted at Coco´s Island National Park and its regional offices.
As part of this effort, Faico invested in the acquisition of 25 communication radios and long-range antennas for the park. This equipment optimizes coordination of tourism activities and conservation operations, reduces emergency response times, strengthens staff safety, and ensures communication in areas where traditional systems face technical limitations. A first aid kit was also delivered to enable immediate response to medical emergencies.
To reinforce monitoring, prevention, protection, and control actions, life jackets were donated, preventive maintenance and vessel repairs were carried out, and a high-performance server was provided to the ACMC Monitoring, Control, and Surveillance Center for the secure storage and efficient management of strategic information.
Additionally, Faico acquired an oceanographic buoy for the park, which will contribute to monitoring marine conditions and expand the capacity to generate scientific data to support informed decision-making in management and conservation.
In terms of infrastructure and institutional communication, signage was renewed at the ACMC Regional Directorate and the park. Also, new signage was installed along the “Doña Dulce” trail within the park, improving site identification, wayfinding, and the overall experience for both staff and visitors. Furthermore, to strengthen technical communication capacities, equipment such as cameras for terrestrial and marine documentation, along with their respective accessories, dry boxes, and audiovisual storage devices, was donated to facilitate the documentation of conservation actions.
These contributions reaffirm Faico’s commitment to comprehensively strengthening ACMC management, consolidating operational and technical capacities that directly impact the protection of Costa Rica’s marine natural heritage.
