San José, November 20, 2025 — In an effort to continue strengthening environmental conservation in the country, the “Costa Rica Conserves” alliance emerges as a collaborative space to facilitate coordination, enhance, and optimize conservation efforts for marine and terrestrial biodiversity across the national territory.

The alliance—driven by the Forever Costa Rica Association, Conservation International Costa Rica, Friends of Cocos Island Foundation (FAICO), and MarViva Foundation—aims to join forces to address the country’s most urgent social and environmental challenges, such as climate change, ecosystem loss, and the overexploitation of natural resources and their subsequent impacts on human well-being.

“Costa Rica Conserves” is a synergy among nonprofit organizations with the goal of coordinating efforts and generating a lasting collective impact on nature conservation, understood as actions directed at protecting, maintaining, and restoring ecosystems and their species, as well as ensuring their sustainable use to meet the needs of present and future generations in balance with the health of nature.

“This agreement is an opportunity to strengthen alliances, seek synergies, and promote collaboration among the different organizations working on conservation. Through Costa Rica Conserves, we will work together to make a greater contribution to biodiversity conservation and human well-being,” said Federico Cartín Arteaga, Executive Director of the Forever Costa Rica Association.

Likewise, Ana Gloria Guzmán Mora, Executive Director of Conservation International Costa Rica, emphasizes that Costa Rica Conserves “seeks to amplify the voices of local communities and civil society in conservation, contribute technical and scientific expertise to achieving national goals and international environmental commitments, and leave a tangible legacy for future generations.”

This alliance represents a new phase in safeguarding the country’s natural heritage, where collaboration among expert organizations with diverse capacities will enable more effective strategic planning, high-impact joint and complementary projects, and provide a space for dialogue and coordination in the formulation, implementation, and evaluation of initiatives, as well as generating technical inputs to inform biodiversity and ecosystem conservation policies.

“The Costa Rica Conserves alliance is a key step in strengthening coordination among civil society, the State, and the private sector around conservation. This collaboration will allow us to coordinate actions, share knowledge, and direct resources toward common priorities, ensuring greater efficiency and impact. At Faico, we firmly believe that through this synergy, we can scale solutions and ensure long-term sustainability of our ecosystems,” said Alejandra Villalobos, Executive Director of Friends of Cocos Island Foundation.

Among its main areas of action are strategic planning, initiative coordination, research and monitoring, environmental education, and resource mobilization. In addition, the alliance establishes a participatory governance structure that guarantees transparency, mutual respect, and sustainability in all actions.

“Effective conservation is only possible when it is grounded in science and actively involves communities. This alliance is key to aligning efforts, generating technical knowledge, strengthening connections with those who depend on marine and coastal ecosystems, and promoting informed decisions that balance human well-being with nature’s health,” stated Katherine Arroyo Arce, Executive Director of the MarViva Foundation.

Open Call to Join the Alliance

The alliance also invites other nonprofit organizations that share its guiding principles to voluntarily join this initiative. Interested organizations may contact Forever Costa Rica at info@costaricaporsiempre.org, or any of the organizations that—together with Forever Costa Rica—are promoting the effort: FAICO, Conservation International, and MarViva.

“Costa Rica Conserves” thus becomes a model of coordination among organizations, reaffirming the country’s leadership in environmental conservation at both regional and global levels.
