FAICO launches the Cocos Island Geoportal: A tool for accessing geospatial information
- The new Geoportal provides access to interactive 3D maps, scientific data, and analysis tools for the conservation and management of Cocos Island National Park.
- The platform offers up-to-date information on the topography, biodiversity, and marine ecosystems of Cocos Island, facilitating decision-making for its protection.
Friends of Cocos Island Foundation (FAICO) and the Cocos Marine Conservation Area (ACMC) announce the launch of the Cocos Island Geoportal, an innovative digital platform that centralizes and facilitates access to geospatial data from the Cocos Island National Park and the Bicentennial Marine Management Area.
This geoportal allows researchers, administrators, and the public to view, query, and download key information about the biodiversity, geology, history, and culture of Cocos Island. Thanks to this interactive tool, users can explore 3D maps, analyse spatial data and generate customized reports, supporting decision-making in conservation and land planning.
«The Geoportal represents a great advance for the management and protection of Cocos Island. It allows us to have reliable and updated information to strengthen the research and conservation of this Natural World Heritage Site,” said Alejandra Villalobos, Executive Director of FAICO.
This tool is added to the environmental education efforts that FAICO has been promoting to raise public awareness about the importance of marine conservation. In June 2024, Friends of Cocos Island led the Immersive Experience: “One Cocos Island, One Ocean”, within the framework of the High-Level Event on Ocean Action: Immersed in Change, to raise public awareness about Costa Rica’s marine identity and the biological importance of the marine ecosystems of our territory.

These initiatives have allowed innovation in scientific dissemination, and the Geoportal is a new step in this direction, providing free and up-to-date access to crucial information about Cocos Island and its adjacent ecosystems.
The development of the Geoportal has been made possible thanks to the collaboration among FAICO, ACMC, the Regional Security Initiative for Central America (CARSI), and other strategic partners. The platform is publicly accessible and available on the official FAICO website: https://cocosisland.org/.
